The design of the restaurant and night club draws its inspiration from the picturesque landscape of Hyderabad. The site is a 55’ wide, 86’ long and 19’ tall space on the ground level and is a part of a hotel building. The space has been sublet to the client who runs a chain of restaurant in other cities in India. The space was divided into 3 distinct zone – a 300 sft of entrance foyer flanked by a curved brick wall partition enclosing the 2000 sft of night club and 3400 sft of restaurant space.
The restaurant space is further divided into two zone. The private dining area with low height suspended rope ceiling, the toilet foyer and the POS all clubbed longitudinally in line with the entrance foyer and the large double height dining space with northern side glazing filling the entire volume with natural light. Each of these areas have a distinct spatial quality, achieved by a controlled juxtaposition of materials and articulation of the envelopes defining these spaces. The rugged textured surface of lime yellow color slate (Shahbad stone) and articulated brick wall has been complimented with relatively plain grey bison board partition and expanded sheet metal with a patina of rust. The brick wall, Bison board partition panel with laser cut geometric patterns and rough textured Shahbad wall clad were laid in a deliberate pattern to heighten the play of light and shadow. A slightly off centered to the double height dining space is a large sculptural metal light fixture hovering over an island seating with an indoor plant in the center.
The intimate foyer space lead the guests into the unexpected large volume of the restaurant and the club. The private dining room with large uneven timber log tables, semi enclosed within the Bison partition gives adequate privacy and still keeps the guest connected to the main restaurant. The ceiling over the foyer and the private dining area is done in jute rope. The flooring is in satin finish and flamed finish Chitoor black granite and teak wood planks around the island bar.
The sculptural light fitting and most of the furniture are designed by us and built with the help of local fabricators and carpenters. The design explores the possibility of engaging sophisticated crafts people like masons, metal fabricators to create spaces which could engage people through its spatial and tactile quality.
