House 242

The client’s brief was to design a home with a spaceship-like roof floating over three floors on a triangular corner site, offering a captivating and challenging design brief. This unique site profile allows for a triangular double-height living area and deck, embracing landscaped vistas from all angles.

Located in a serene gated community, the design features five bedrooms. We strategically divided the site to place public spaces towards the triangular section, opening up to the landscape and street, while the private areas are positioned along the adjacent, more secluded part of the site with controlled openings for privacy.

A striking sculptural spiral staircase and a grand double-height triangular deck invite natural light into the common areas and connect the residence with the street. The rear of the site offers a landscaped patch and a water channel, providing a tranquil backdrop for the bedrooms and dining spaces.

The tall porch, clad in timber, marks the entrance, harmonizing with the stone screen along the sloping roof above the second floor. The house’s unique termination is defined by its folded plate roof, giving it a distinctive silhouette. Between the sloping RCC roof and the masonry wall, stone-clad ribbed wall fenestration mimics the timber windows of homes in the hilly areas of North India. These stone-clad ribs are repeated on all levels in varying measures, creating a cohesive aesthetic throughout the house.

Dedicated to the kids’ bedrooms and family room, the continuous sloping roof follows the room grids, creating a cohesive and dynamic space. Each kids’ room features a mezzanine bed, optimizing the lower level for study and play. This project exemplifies contemporary design, merging functionality with aesthetic appeal, and making the most of the unique site characteristics.
